Corvette distributors from 1962 to 1972. Fuel Injection distributors are =
not=20
specifically addressed; however, many items will apply to these =
distributors as=20
well. My definition of <I>restoration</I> is to bring a distributor back =
to its=20
original appearance and function by reconditioning the original parts, =
replacing=20
parts only when absolutely necessary, and using the correct parts for=20
replacement. It is not a process of gutting the distributor of all its =
original=20
Delco components, substituting =93will-fit=94 reproduction or =
aftermarket parts and=20
then calling it restored =96 a distributor must function properly to be =
called=20
restored. True restoration takes time, experience, patience and=20
resourcefulness.<O:P> </O:P></P>
<P class=3DMsoNormal>A general misconception is that distributors are =
sealed for=20
life devices that never need attention with the exception of changing =
points,=20
condensers, caps and rotors. This misunderstanding may stem from the GM =
service=20
manuals which state that distributors have =93permanent type lubrication =
and no=20
periodic maintenance is required=94. However the manuals do not =
adequately address=20
long term wear issues, which leads into the first steps of restoring a =
tach=20
drive distributor.</P>
<P class=3DMsoNormal align=3Dcenter><O:P><IMG border=3D0=20

Inspect</SPAN></U></B></H1>
<P class=3DMsoNormal>After the distributor is completely disassembled =
and cleaned=20
with a solvent degreaser, then each part can be inspected for wear =
problems.=20
Areas of typical wear and the solution are as follows:</P>
<OL style=3D"MARGIN-TOP: 0in" type=3DA>
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>Main shaft gear and tach drive gear- The most common =
problem=20
  is sheared gear teeth on both parts. This is usually accompanied by =
excessive=20
  tach drive gear end clearance (also see items <A=20
  href=3D"http://www.tispecialty.com/articles/article6.htm#c">C</A> =
&amp; <A=20
  href=3D"http://www.tispecialty.com/articles/article6.htm#f">F</A>). =
</LI></OL>
<P style=3D"MARGIN-LEFT: 0.5in" class=3DMsoNormal><B><A =
name=3Dsa></A>Solution:<SPAN=20
style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN></B>If<B> </B>the main shaft =
and tach=20
drive gears are sheared then replacement is the only solution. When the =
main=20
shaft is replaced it is extremely important to use a shaft that has the =
same cam=20
brazed onto the end. GM used (38) different main shaft cams in tach =
drive=20
distributors from 1962 to 1972.This cam is fundamental to the =
centrifugal=20
advance curve because it determines the shape of the curve as well as=20
controlling other functional characteristics (see article =93<A=20
href=3D"http://www.tispecialty.com/articles/article2.htm" =
target=3D_blank>All TI=20
Distributors Are Not Equivalent</A>=94 THE CORVETTE RESTORER Vol. =
Twenty-One,=20
Number One, Summer 1994). If an identical main shaft cannot be found, =
the=20
original cam should be removed and brazed onto a good shaft. One should =
be=20
careful to orient the cam in the same angular position (with respect to =
the roll=20
pin hole) as it was on the original main shaft. Caution: It is possible =
that=20
substituting a main shaft with a different cam will have a detrimental =
effect on=20
the performance of the vehicle.</P>
<OL style=3D"MARGIN-TOP: 0in" type=3DA start=3D2>
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>Main shaft and lower bearing- The bearing is usually =
worn to=20
  an oval shape due to the side thrust produced by the drive (cam) gear. =
When=20
  wear is present the bearing will have circumferential grooves that are =

  mirrored in the main shaft. </LI></OL>
<P style=3D"MARGIN-LEFT: 0.5in" class=3DMsoNormal><B><A =
name=3Dsb></A>Solution:<SPAN=20
style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN></B>Main shaft wear is usually =

restricted to the area in contact with the lower bearing. Minor =
circumferential=20
grooves can be removed from the main shaft by using fine grit abrasive =
tape and=20
a lathe or similar means to rotate the shaft while polishing. An =
original main=20
shaft is .489=94 in diameter- this diameter should not be reduced during =
polishing=20
by any more than .001=94 in the area of the bearings. If the main shaft =
is heavily=20
scored, then it will be necessary to replace it (see <A=20
href=3D"http://www.tispecialty.com/articles/article6.htm#sa">Solution =
A</A>.) For=20
bearing replacement, the lower bearing can be driven from the housing =
with a=20
suitable drift. The housing should be measured to determine what size of =
bearing=20
is needed. Delco machined the housings anywhere from .639=94 to .645=94 =
in diameter.=20
A bearing with an outside diameter of .002=94 greater than the housing =
bore should=20
be pressed into place and then reamed to the proper clearance- .0005=94 =
to .002=94=20
larger than the main shaft diameter. Bearing material should be bearing =
bronze=20
not Oilite, brass or silicon bronze. Note: Upper bearings have not been=20
mentioned because they generally see very little wear since there are no =
side=20
forces acting on them. If an upper bearing needs to be replaced follow =
the same=20
procedure outlined for the lower bearing.</P>
<OL style=3D"MARGIN-TOP: 0in" type=3DA start=3D3>
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in" =
class=3DMsoNormal><A=20
  name=3Dc></A>Distributor housing where tach drive gear contacts the =
inside=20
  surface- The tach drive gear is heat-treated steel, which makes it =
very hard,=20
  unlike the cast iron housing which is relatively soft. Due to marginal =

  lubrication and the thrust load produced from two mating gears (which =
is in=20
  the direction of the housing) the hardened tach gear bores a hole into =
the=20
  soft housing creating excessive end clearance. Note, for mid-1970 and =
newer=20
  distributors, including service distributors, Delco addressed this =
problem by=20
  making a minor change to the housing. The fix was a nylon button that =
was=20
  added in such a way that the tach gear would bear against it. This =
redesign is=20
  easily detected since it is accompanied by a thru hole in the housing =
that is=20
  necessary to locate the nylon button. </LI></OL>
<P style=3D"MARGIN-LEFT: 0.5in" class=3DMsoNormal><B>Solution:<SPAN=20
style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN></B>Although there are many =
ways to=20
repair this problem, most of the solutions destroy the originality of =
the=20
housing. One method that preserves the originality involves the use of a =

custom-made spacer that is attached to the end of the tach gear. The =
procedure=20
goes as follows: The distributor housing is set up in a Bridgeport-type =
mill so=20
that the tach drive cavity worn area is perpendicular to the axis of the =
tach=20
drive gear. The damaged area is then milled to produce an unblemished =
bearing=20
surface. Next the tach gear, washer and coupling are installed in the =
housing=20
and the distance between the end of the tach gear and the new surface =
that was=20
generated is determined. The last step is to custom make a spacer from =
bearing=20
bronze to a thickness that will allow .010=94 endplay in the tach drive =
gear.=20
Since this spacer is held in place by the tach gear, a hole must be =
drilled in=20
the end of the gear so that a protrusion on the spacer can be pressed =
into the=20
gear.<B><O:P> </O:P></B></P>
<OL style=3D"MARGIN-TOP: 0in" type=3DA start=3D4>
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>Advance weights/main shaft cam interface- this =
fretting type=20
  wear is caused by almost constant relative motion between these two =
parts and=20
  is aggravated by a lack of lubrication. The wear, if present, will be =
visible=20
  as indentations at the points of contact. </LI></OL>
<P style=3D"MARGIN-LEFT: 0.5in" class=3DMsoNormal><B>Solution:<SPAN=20
style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN></B>Since the main shaft cam =
is so=20
important, as previously discussed, every effort should be taken to =
restore the=20
original cam. Shallow indentations can usually be removed by using a die =
grinder=20
with a fine grit wheel to uniformly remove material while maintaining =
the=20
original contour. The surface should then be polished with a sanding =
roll.=20
Advance weight contact point indentations can also be ground smooth, =
however if=20
much stock removal is required (which would alter the geometry of the =
weight)=20
the result would be a change in the advance curve. If that is the case, =
the=20
advance weights will have to be replaced using the correct style (four =
different=20
part numbers were used.<B><O:P> </O:P></B>)</P>
<OL style=3D"MARGIN-TOP: 0in" type=3DA start=3D5>
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in" =
class=3DMsoNormal>End=20
  of distributor housing where the driven gear shim contacts cast iron =
surface-=20
  For various reasons this surface is sometimes scored and worn in an =
irregular=20
  pattern. A poor bearing surface at this location can usually be seen =
by=20
  looking at the shims that mate with the housing. The shims will show=20
  non-uniform contact. </LI></OL>
<P style=3D"MARGIN-LEFT: 0.5in" class=3DMsoNormal><B>Solution:<SPAN=20
style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN></B>When this surface is =
scored or worn=20
unevenly, the only solution is to machine the housing (using a lathe) in =
order=20
it to get a good bearing surface.<B> <O:P></O:P></B></P>
<OL style=3D"MARGIN-TOP: 0in" type=3DA start=3D6>
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in" =
class=3DMsoNormal><A=20
  name=3Df></A>Main shaft centerline to tach drive gear centerline =
problem- This=20
  is not a wear problem, but it is a condition that exists in an =
estimated ten=20
  percent of tach drive distributor housings. The problem is that the=20
  centerlines were machined too closely by Delco, causing abnormal wear =
between=20
  the main shaft gear and the tach drive gear. Deformed or sheared teeth =
on both=20
  gears can be a result of this problem. Assuming the upper and lower =
bearings=20
  are within specification, it is best identified by installing a new =
main=20
  shaft, coupling and tach drive gear into the housing and then rotating =
the=20
  main shaft to check for binding. The main shaft should turn freely in =
both=20
  directions. </LI></OL>
<P style=3D"MARGIN-LEFT: 0.5in" class=3DMsoNormal><B><A =
name=3Dsf></A>Solution:=20
</B><SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;</SPAN>If the centerline =
spacing is=20
marginally out of specification, select fit of parts (coupling, tach =
gear and=20
main shaft) may solve the problem. Otherwise, the only solution is to =
have the=20
housing machined correctly. Since the position of the tach gear is =
already=20
determined, or at least very difficult to change, the only option is to =
shift=20
the main shaft centerline. This has to be done by a very competent =
machine shop=20
that can jig bore the bearing bores in the housing to the specified =
center to=20
center distance of .425=94. Oversized bearings (on the outside diameter) =
will have=20
to be made to fit the bores. Ream the I.D. of the bearings as in <A=20
href=3D"http://www.tispecialty.com/articles/article6.htm#sb">Solution =
B</A>.<SPAN=20
style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN><B>This procedure is very =
tedious and=20
would significantly add to the cost of a restoration.<O:P> =
</O:P></B></P>
<BLOCKQUOTE>

  style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Bearing misalignment- This =
is a=20
  condition where the upper and lower bearings are not on the same=20
  centerline.<SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>This =
condition can be=20
  detected by slowly sliding a new main shaft through a good top bearing =
and=20
  into the lower bearing.<SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; =
</SPAN>If there=20
  is misalignment you can feel the shaft hit the edge of the lower =
bearing and=20
  when fully inserted the shaft will not turn freely.</P>
  <P style=3D"tab-stops: .5in" =
class=3DMsoBodyTextIndent><B>Solution:<SPAN=20
  style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN></B>The housing will have to =
be jig=20
  bored in a fashion similar to <A=20
  href=3D"http://www.tispecialty.com/articles/article6.htm#sf">Solution =
F</A>;=20
  only this time the objective is to correct the alignment of the =
bearing bores=20
  while maintaining the correct tach gear to main shaft centerline=20
  distance.<SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN><B>Again very =

  tedious.</B></P></BLOCKQUOTE>
<OL style=3D"MARGIN-TOP: 0in" type=3DA start=3D8>
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l2 level1 lfo4; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>Vacuum controls- This is not an obvious wear issue, =
but it is=20
  what you cannot see that could create a<SPAN=20
  style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;&nbsp; </SPAN>problem. The rubber =
diaphragm=20
  inside the crimped housing develops tears that will cause the control =
to not=20
  actuate and it will also allow air to enter the engine (vacuum leak.) =
For this=20
  reason, old vacuum controls do not tend to be very reliable and they =
are=20
  usually not cosmetically attractive. </LI></OL>
<P style=3D"MARGIN-LEFT: 0.5in" class=3DMsoNormal><B>Solution: </B><SPAN =

style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;</SPAN>Replacing vacuum controls =
presents a=20
dilemma, as GM/Delco stopped making vacuum controls in 1994. An outside =
source=20
currently makes all the controls and they are packaged under the Delco =
name.=20
Unfortunately, these controls do not look like and are not numbered like =
the=20
originals. Originals were stamped with the last three digits of the =
seven digit=20
GM part number. These three digits were followed by another number that=20
indicated the total amount of advance the control would provide. Current =

controls are stamped with a <I>B</I> followed by a number that has no =
functional=20
significance. Some reproduction controls are available which look very =
similar=20
to the originals, but they miss the target on function. Best advise- =
look for=20
N.O.S. vacuum controls.</P>
<P=20
style=3D"TEXT-INDENT: -0.25in; MARGIN-LEFT: 0.5in; mso-list: l2 level1 =

class=3DMsoNormal>I.<SPAN=20
style=3D"FONT: 7pt 'Times New =

</SPAN>Weight base/cam (on point-style distributors)- Inspect the cam =
for wear=20
caused by the rubbing block on the points pivot arm.</P>
<P style=3D"MARGIN-LEFT: 0.5in" class=3DMsoNormal><B>Solution:</B><SPAN=20
style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Minor score marks can be =
removed from=20
the cam by using a 3M Scotch-Brite deburring wheel or equivalent =
abrasive.=20
Replace the weight base/cam if the score marks cannot be removed or if =
the cam=20
lobes are worn below .987=94 diametric reading from peak to peak. Note: =
If this=20
part needs to be replaced use an identical part- check and compare the =
three=20
digit stamped-in code number. Ten different part number weight base/cams =
were=20
used.<O:P> </O:P></P>
<H1><B><U><SPAN style=3D"FONT-STYLE: normal">Cosmetic Restoration<O:P>=20
</O:P></SPAN></U></B></H1>
<P class=3DMsoNormal>After all parts are repaired or replaced and =
everything is=20
functionally correct (a trial fit of parts is a good idea at this =
point), the=20
cosmetic segment of restoration can begin. The housing usually requires =
the=20
greatest amount of attention. After thorough solvent cleaning, the =
housing may=20
have some paint left on it as well as some rust. Media blasting with =
glass beads=20
is probably the best means to prepare the housing for painting. Care =
should be=20
taken not to let any glass beads come in contact with the bearings or =
other=20
internal surfaces. Broken down glass beads are difficult to remove from =
this=20
area and they are abrasive in nature. Remnants of glass beads will =
quickly=20
destroy not only the bearings, but also the main shaft. After =
preparation, the=20
housing should be masked (no paint on the portion that goes in the =
engine) and=20
painted with a semi gloss black. After cleaning, other distributor =
components=20
can be carefully media blasted, cleaned again and then be either treated =
with a=20
rust inhibitor or replated, whichever was original for that particular=20
part.<O:P> </O:P></P>
<H1><B><U><SPAN style=3D"FONT-STYLE: normal">Assembly<O:P>=20
</O:P></SPAN></U></B></H1>
<P class=3DMsoNormal>When everything is cleaned, painted and plated to=20
satisfaction, the distributor is ready for assembly as follows:</P>
<OL style=3D"MARGIN-TOP: 0in" type=3D1>
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l0 level1 lfo3; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>Repack the upper oil well (cavity surrounding upper =
bearing)=20
  with an oil absorbent material; a folded 3=94x 3=94 piece of gauze is =
suitable.=20
  Saturate the packing with oil (20wt. non-detergent motor oil is =
preferred).=20
  Note: Due to contamination, I do not attempt to use the saw dust like =
material=20
  that was originally packed in the well.=20
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l0 level1 lfo3; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>Install a new plastic seal (still available from GM =
under part=20
  number 1950569 for 10-pack) in the counterbore above the oil well and =
then=20
  position the felt washer on top of the seal. Saturate the felt with =
20wt. oil.=20

  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l0 level1 lfo3; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>Install the nylon button in the housing for the tach =
drive=20
  gear (mid 1970 and later housings) as well as the nylon buttons (first =
used in=20
  1967 to provide improved wear pads for the weights) on the weight =
base/cam=20
  (rotating pole piece on TI).=20
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l0 level1 lfo3; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>Install the vacuum control.=20
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l0 level1 lfo3; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>Install the lead out wire and grommet before =
locating breaker=20
  plate with new points and condenser. With TI distributors the brass =
washer and=20
  stationary pole piece assembly are located over the upper bearing =
instead.=20
  Secure either of these parts with the original retaining ring. Note: =
When=20
  working on point-style distributors, pay attention to the ground wire =
that is=20
  crimped to the breaker plate, because these wires can break at the =
crimp=20
  causing a loss of ground (repair as needed.)=20
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l0 level1 lfo3; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>Next, install the stop bushing and retaining clip =
onto the pin=20
  located on the underside of the main shaft cam. The weight =
base/cam<SPAN=20
  style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>(rotating pole piece on TI) =
can then=20
  be positioned onto the main shaft using a high quality grease to fill =
the two=20
  grooves (on the shaft) that the weight base will slide over.=20
  <LI style=3D"mso-list: l0 level1 lfo3; tab-stops: list .5in"=20
  class=3DMsoNormal>With a generous amount of lubricant (20wt. oil =
again) on the=20
